Bean Bag Lounge Chairs

If you are looking for smaller lounge bean bags, chair bean bags might be the best option.

Traditionally they work well when space is limited, however can be a little too small if you want to fit more than one person on them.

Below are some examples of chair bean bags that work in any living room, rumpus or games room:

These designs also mimic furniture you already have in your home or office and are certainly different to classic tear drop designs you might associate bean bags with.

Modular Lounge Bean Bags

Modular lounges are great for mixing and matching pieces to form the lounge suite you need.

The great news is bean bags are now made to match the same look as custom made sofa sets which cost in excess of $2,000+.

Customarily, there are 3 main pieces which make up modular lounges.

These three pieces can be mixed together in a few different ways for different looks.

Here are the dimensions of our Modular bean bags which can be purchased separately or together to create your own lounge suite:

1. Single Seater Sofa
2. Double Seater Sofa
3. Square Ottoman

The option of having each piece sold separately means you can mix and match, even keeping it simple with just 2 pieces as well:

Best Bean Bags for Reading and Watching TV

When reading and watching TV you need a lounge that supports your back for hours on end, without feeling strained as time goes on.

Just like any lounge, adding throw cushions onto a bean bag will make a difference to how much support you can create for your body.

Firstly, having a solid foundation to rest anything on is key.

luxury sofa bean bag

Traditional furniture such as sofa’s are made with a solid frame, so there is always a backing which you can rest upon.

Bean bags on the other hand don’t have this solid structure so to achieve the same support it comes down to how the panels are designed to fit together.

By creating a larger surface area and creating a stitch line (internally) where the back rest meets the seating position means your centre of gravity will always be weighted towards the lower section the bean bag.

This automatically ensures you can lean back as much as you like and the bean bag is not going to flip over or sink to one side.

Posture for bean bags

The last important aspect is to ensure a lounge chair bean bag is made with a tapered top.

As beans are free to move internally, not having a definitive structure at the top of the bean bag means that beans will balloon at the top, causing a shift in your centre of gravity.

By tapering the top of lounge chair designs, beans have no choice but to better surround your body and remain in the lower part of the lounge, (exactly how the majority of foam is in the lower portion of traditional couches).

This ensures proper support and most importantly, you remain comfortable for long periods of time.

Best Height for Bean Bag Lounges

One thing to keep in mind, is the difficulty of getting out of certain bean bags.

The lower they are to the ground the harder they can be to get out of.

This is something to keep in mind depending on the people you are designing/catering for.

The flip side of lower furniture however is that it can make the room look larger. Lower furniture creates a deception of higher ceilings.

Keeping in mind that a traditional seating height of a standard chair is around 45cm off the ground.

It can help to think of this height when it comes to choosing your bean bag set up.

How to keep bean bag lounges looking “full” for life

Unlike regular furniture, bean bags tend to look a little droopy over time.

This is because beans inside bean bags go flat and when they go flat they reduce in size. (The filling itself literally shrinks).

There are 2 ways to combat this:

1. Choose bean filling which is made of a smaller beans. Strangely Kmart and Target sell their beans in batches of “smaller” and “larger” bean filling most of the time.

You can see this through their clear plastic packaging.

Ideally, you want to pick up the bean filling made of smaller white balls.

Smaller balls means less compression over time

2. The second option, which has the greatest impact on keeping your bean bag looking fuller for longer is using a combination of crumb foam + bean filling.

For example, Clark rubber sells crumb foam.  I would not recommend filling a bean bag with only crumb foam however.

Crumb foam has a very low density compared to regular bean bag filling, so when you sit in your bean bag lounge it will fell like you are almost touching the floor when resting in it, (if it’s completely filled with crumb foam).

If you mix the small white ball filling with a crumb foam combination in a ratio of 60/40 (in favour of the polystyrene ball filling) the beans themselves have room to move around the foam mixture.

The small balls won’t compress as much, meaning you will get much more life out of them and won’t need to “top up” for a very long time.

This ensures your new investment in comfort looks just as great as the day you took delivery.

Outdoor Bean Bag Lounges

Since an outdoor dining space in Australia has now become mandatory for new home designs, you might want to consider using your bean bags outside.

We have found marine grade vinyl to be the best option for any outdoor space.

It is a smoother fabric (no weave) so there are no places for mould and other nasties to grow on the fabric itself.

It is naturally, waterproof, UV resistant, so won’t fade or crack when left in the sun and is basically designed to live its entire life in the sun.

It also contains properties within the fabric itself to prevent mould from growing.

And whether you have a chlorine pool or salt pool nearby as well, it doesn’t matter. They won’t be bleached (colours are embedded into the fabric) nor will they fade in the sun over years of use either (they are colourfast).

Converting “Chair to Lounge” Bean Bag

A popular bean bag we sell is called The Unwind Recliner.

It works as a comfy chair to sit in and can be folded out to convert into a lounger.

The benefit of this design is if you want to watch a movie you can convert existing furniture in a second, (one handed even) and find yourself completely relaxed.

We also have another design called a flip chair, however it really is most comfortable when lying down only.

It has a “in-built” pillow with a raised section at the head of the bean bag.

So is blissful to lie down and sleep in.

However, as a chair we don’t find it as comfy as the other bean bags we craft, simply due to the lack of back support when it is raised up.

(An important factor mentioned about lounge bean bags above).

Luxury Bean Bags

We love that there are so many bean bags to choose from today.

Many suppliers and other manufacturers class their bean bags as luxury bean bags, I haven’t really found out what makes them so luxurious.

However I do know that dressing up furniture can make all the difference for a luxurious feel.

The simple combination of cushions and throw rugs can really dress up soft furnishings.

Getting that luxury look, means accessorising And different textures transform a bean bag.

If you are looking for indoor bean bags then throw rugs with thicker weaves create an extra dimension for an indulgent look.

Matching cushions like a professional can be done to completely change the look of bean bag lounges as well.

In fact, many of our interior design clients opt for all white bean bags knowing they can drastically change the look with striking accessories.

Conclusion

Finding the best lounge bean bags comes down to design plus comfort.

Normally, when opting for any fashion piece like a new pair of shoes you need to give up comfort for design.

And I would say the greatest benefit of bean bag lounges is you can now have both.

You don’t have to give up anything.

With the advancement of technology, craftsmanship and a few ideas combined, we are surprised bean bags that act, look and (arguably feel better) than traditional sofas aren’t even more popular than they are.

They are simply cheaper than their counter parts, our bean bags can be used outside, can be mixed and matched just like traditional modular furniture and are much easier to move than heavy couches.
